Dietary Principles for the
Management of
Gastrectomy/Dumping Syndrome
l. Carbohydrates are limited to small amounts to
prevent the rapid passage of food.
2. High protein content (meat, egg, cheese) is important to
rebuild tissue and to maintain weight.
3. Relatively high fat content needed to slow passage of
food through the intestines and to maintain weight.
4. Meals should be of small portions and frequent. Food
intake recommended every 1 1/2 hour.
5. Fluids should not be taken with meals. Best time for
fluids is 30 to 40 minutes before or after solid food is eaten.
6. Do not take milk, sugar, sweets, desserts; no alcohol or
sweet carbonated beverages.
